David Earp worked at Portobello Road market in London, specialising in vintage clothing and textiles until 1998, when he left for India to start his project Shuktara.
Shuktara is based in Calcutta and is for children and young people with disabilities, who have no families to care for them. About seven years ago David, started to use his expertise in textiles to design throws and blankets using vintage cottons to help raise money for his charity. His eye for colour and design and instinctive ways of putting pieces together were an instant hit.
David Earp's pieces at Circus include hand-stitched vintage indigo cotton scarves and wraps. The top sides are made from one single piece of indigo and the reverse sides are a multi-patch of horizontal strips. Between the two layers is a layer of white cotton mulmul, creating a softer, warmer, more quilted feel. Each piece is stitched by hand in 100% white cotton thread.
