Russian artist Lyubov Popova evolved her style dramatically towards the end of her career. Popova moved away from the abstract ideals she previously held as a member of the Suprematist group, a myriad of artists whose mission was to create art that was in keeping with the industrial revolution characterised by geometric forms. Instead, she turned to practical art, creating textile designs, posters and book covers. ‘Composition (Blue-Yellow-Black)’ was one of Popova’s final gouache paintings before she joined Aleksander Rodchenko's Constructivist circle, which declared abandonment of easel painting at their 1921 exhibition 5 x 5.
