Using a combination of red, white, black, green and pink paint, Russian artist Lyubov Popova created a series of paintings inspired by the medium of collage. ‘Painterly Architectonics’ was one of the penultimate artworks from this series, which Popova produced in 1917, combining predominantly flat shapes on a beige surface. However, the rounded lower rim of the green plane implies that Popova wanted to create an element of three-dimensionality. Popova assigned the term ‘architectonic’ to this series as she treated planes as solid material entities, building composition which focused on the relationships between individual elements
